Allan Sutton & the Record Research Associates
Soft Cover, 7" x 10", 298 pp
Although Eli Oberstein's Varsity & Royale labels were hailed as promising new entries in 1939, his United States Record Corporation collapsed into bankruptcy a year later - but not before Oberstein had managed to assemble a substantial (and often intriguing) catalog.
This volume covers USRC's complete 1939-40 output from its many original recordings to its reissues of material from Crown, Gennett, Paramount, Ultraphone and other labels. Other features include an illustrated USRC history, a balanced, objective look at Oberstein, a discussion of original vs. dubbed masters based on selective comparative testing by the author and the RR group, previously unpublished data on the European recordings used by Royale and excerpts from original record reviews in period publications.
