Playing your records with properly configured styli can dramatically improve your listening experience and the quality of your transfers.
Our generic Shure M-44 78 rpm stylus ($60) is a 3.0 Conical. This stylus will give generally satisfactory results for casual listening, but a much cleaner sound will usually be obtained through the use of a custom ground stylus.
Because our custom styli are truncated you will experience the best, cleanest sound possible. This is because the very tip of the diamond has been ground off, enabling the stylus to track the groove walls without actually touching the bottom where most of the damage and dirt is present. (Note that we cannot truncate styli smaller than 1.25 mil.) Prices for custom styli are admittedly steep, but serious audiophiles, broadcasters and transfer engineers will appreciate the results.
Conical & Truncated Conical (C & TC) Styli are $150 each. Conical styli are useful for vertical recordings, and for lateral recordings with more pronounced groove wear. (When playing worn records, better results may also be obtained by using slightly larger sizes.)
Elliptical & Truncated Elliptical (E & TE) Styli are $175 each. Elliptical styli are great for playing lateral (normal) 78rpm recordings that are in above average condition.
