The Historic Masters series was begun in the early 1970s by a handful of collectors in collaboration with the British Institute of Recorded Sound. Its purpose was to publish important operatic recordings from extant metal parts still held by EMI (primarily). Many of these recordings were never issued, or are so rare as to be virtually unavailable in original form. Each issue was pressed in a limited edition, based on the number of active subscribers. The Historic Masters program ended a number of years ago, and the issues have become collector's items in their own right. Click here to download a spreadsheet with complete details on the entire series (original labels; catalog, matrix & take numbers; composers, recording dates, etc.).
Because the pressings were done on high-grade vinyl, they have a quietness and clarity far exceeding the original issues.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Significant discounts are available for quantity orders, as follows (enter the appropriate promo code at checkout):
10-20 records, 10% discount (HM10%)
21-50 records, 20% discount (HM20%)
51-100 records 30% discount (HM30%)
101-150 records, 40% discount (HM40%)
151+ records, 50% discount (HM50%)
Quantities are limited and are sold on a first-come, first-served basis; any records you order that are not in stock will be immediately refunded. The earlier issues are the most readily available (which is why they are also the least expensive).
Issues with a HMA- prefix were originally issued as 10" discs and those with a HMB- prefix were issued as 10½" or 12" discs.
Please note that these records may only be played on a modern turntable; steel needles and heavy tonearms will chew them up.
